J’adore Cecile Cassel

by Zoe Irwin in Diary, This month I'm loving...

This week I met Cecile Cassel. I must admit I was very excited. A true French starlet. She did not disappoint!
Cecile was attending the Love Ball and I styled her hair in an un-done super-shiny chignon. She was dressed in Louis Vuitton, in the coolest dress and jacket.
Cecile was really relaxed and played French songs from her iPod as we helped get her ready for the night ahead. She was laughing and joking and was one of the nicest actresses I have ever met. I over-sprayed her hair to make it Gothic shiny and pinned it up in a random manner. She made it all seem so effortless to be that beautiful and looked so pretty.
J’adore Cecille Cassel!

References I love – Kim Basinger

by Zoe Irwin in This month I'm loving...

If you can’t see this video clip, then click here

This is Kim Basinger in LA Confidential. It goes with my how-to and it’s the hair I have done ‘Pop Star to Opera Star’.
I luuurve this look, and it gets used so much in different versions. Check  out Penelope Cruz at the Golden Globes last week…
I get asked to quote on it all the time, which means it’s really popular with magazine readers – our clients!
Imagine being the hairdresser that came up with it! Amazing!

UK’s Most Wanted

by Zoe Irwin in Diary, Events, Inspirations, Kit bag, Magazines, Shoots, This month I'm loving: 2008

Zoe Irwin with Lisa Snowdon at the UK's Most Wanted

Zoe Irwin with Lisa Snowdon at the UK's Most Wanted 2009 Grand Final

Creative HEAD stepped up the style stakes this year with its inspiring UK’s Most Wanted awards, which proved full of surprises. I brought along a few friends for a special Creative Head shoot. They loved the evening and the shoot, which had such beautiful hair and styling. The trouble was there was so much going on, it was hard to know which bit to watch!

My Best Dressed Award goes to the beautiful Sacha Mascolo-Tarbuck, who wore a jacket that screamed “I am so hot and so this season.” If I didn’t love her so much I would be jealous!

And Adam Reed, who owns so much of his best mate Henry Holland’s collection that I’m sure he even jogs in it!

Seeing all my peers and the work they do for awards inspires me to push my ideas further. I left thinking I want an award and I must check Net-a-porter for a new jacket when I get home!

In the salon…

by Zoe Irwin in Diary, Hari's, Kit bag, This month I'm loving...

The Hari’s crew need to be informed super-quick to keep up with the quick turnover of news from the weeklies so I’ve been giving trend demos at the salon.. This season’s chignon is extra-polished so I am upping my serum usage and my gel pots are empty after styling so many slick back looks on shoots. I use tint bowls filled with gel and apply with a brush with the precision of a high lift tint!

In my eternal search for the best beauty treatments for the salon I am now donning lashes that last a month and promise early morning glamour. The trouble is, with my half head of Russian hair extensions and my major lash flutter, I am becoming so fake. When my handsome man says I look cute I’m not really sure whether to take it as a compliment. The only way to understand a new salon treatment is to have it: our Brazilian Blo Out has a waiting list and our lash queen is busy as can be. Boy do I have to step up with my colour and foil!

So for me it’s back to school in the form of the Wella Studio. The only way to compete with the best is to obtain the highest knowledge and spend days watching the coolest new crowd in Hackney and Copenhagen. I think it’s an exciting mix. And my brushes are more than ready!

Summer lovin’ continued! More summer kit bag must-haves

by Zoe Irwin in Diary, Diary: 2008, Kit bag, Shoots, This month I'm loving...

The most important thing is to be careful what you use. You need to know that the product will wash out with ease and not cause any harm to the hair. DO NOT put any type of sun oil spray in as I cannot guarantee it will wash out. I would not want to land the bill for a model that cannot shoot for days as she looks like she has just come from the local chippie!!

Sisley Body Sun Oil
This is a very fine spray, which leaves a high sheen. I use this when I’m shooting outside and want a wet look. Tong the hair to make it wavy and then spray the oil on liberally. It will give the hair a wet look but keep the texture in to create a surfy beach look. Also the oil is a super reflector so it’s great in the studio if you are shooting (be careful of the floor: it’s not so great if the model then slips and falls.) I always put at towel down to stop the oil from causing accidents!

Alterna Caviar Beach
This spray gives realistic end-of-day beach hair. I also love it because it’s kinda posh and has caviar in – a treat for the hair and an upmarket touch to your kit!

She Uemura Art of Style Fibre Lift
This gives amazing hold. Use it to create this season’s slick looks. Comb it through the hair then dry with a diffuser and finish by applying Sisley oil on top with a tint brush.

This month I’m loving blonde…

by Zoe Irwin in Diary, Hari's, This month I'm loving...

p1040782My blonde month started with a call from Pixie Lott’s mum. She called me on a saturday afternoon after a recommendation from Caroline Barnes, the celebrity makeup artist, and asked me if I could come over to colour her daughter’s hair. Now, of course, I had heard of Pixie. She is the beautiful, pale blonde with the big voice and hot song that is currently Number One in the Charts.

So off I trot on a Sunday night with a bag full of tints in every possible shade. We ate chinese and I applied in turn five different hues of pastel, beige and sand. I had a one-on-one lesson of the Pixie Clap Dance (it’s addictive) and left with the song in my head and a dance move to impress the salon juniors (I am soooooo down with it).

A few days later I found myself in a suite at The Berkeley with Cat Deely, who was over from LA to do press interviews for the Walkers crisp ad that she’d just shot with Gary Lineker. I had actuallly been dying to meet her as her best friend is a friend of mine and I had heard so many funny stories about her. She is the kinda girl that you would love to have as your friend. I blew her hair out with NO product (which my god must be a first for me). Her hair is insanely great and gave me the most hair envy that I have ever had. We talked shoes and boys and ate packets of Walkers. It was one of those days that I think to myself How did I land such a great job!!! She is now my ultimate soft, creamy blonde icon. She wore a playsuit and flats and inspired me to rethink my summer wardrobe and maybe my new Colour Crushes.

My best friend, Lisa, has been lightening up her hair for the past year. I started by placing packets of lightener just through the underneath and then toning them with an ashy wash when they lifted. But this month I decided to ooomph it all up a notch and grabbed random chunks and coated them with a fistfull of lightener to make it surfier and edgier. This was mixed with one week in St Lucia, a fortnight in Cuba and a week in South America, which makes it a little tricky when clients walk into Hari’s requesting Lisa Snowdon honey hair. It has been developed over a year of adding and toning and lying in the sun! The funniest thing is they don’t know that I do Lisa’s hair so they bring out a pic and say “Can you make me look like this” and I mutter the words of colourists all over the land:  “Of course I can , I know just how.” I am thinking of doing a deal with Virgin Airlines tying in a sun holiday with a set of Hari’s lights to truly get the effect!

I’ve been sending my clients off on their holidays with  bottles of gloss veg colour to match their tone. Who wants to get five days in and feel like their colour’s ropey? A lot of colourists tell their client to have a colour when they get back. I say why? You pay a month’s wages to go on a holiday, do a load of extra sweaty work in the gym and plan the bikini looks so….why sit on the beach with roots?

After fashion shoots with blondes, topping up Donna Air’s soft ash and developing  the perfect beach blonde at Hari’s, I end my month with another visit from Pixie. She sings as I put in her lights and reminds me that the blondes I get to hang with have sooooo much fun.

Summer lovin’

by Zoe Irwin in Diary, Diary: 2008, Kit bag, Magazines, Shoots, This month I'm loving...

brume_jour_protectrice-lowresThe mags are writing up their August issues so I’ve spent the last few weeks quoting beach tricks and creating  sexy holiday hair. Here’s a sneak peak inside my beach kit bag…

Sisley Golden Dry Oil for Face, Body and Hair

Ideal for girls who want to look hot and glittery on the beach – in a Vogue kinda way, not a WAG way. It’s a light oil with fine, copper-gold sparkle – run it through wet or dry hair and then tie in a top knot to add height. Or simple apply on top of a strong gel for hold and shimmer.

I used the oil throughout a whole week of beauty shoots in Ibiza for Grazia and I still had enough in the bottle for a fortnight away in St Lucia myself! I call it Credit Crunch Shimmer!

Kérastase Soleil

I love everything in this range – nothing beats it for UV protection and lightness. I can bask in the sun without worrying about messing up my hair and highlights!!
