If I had a salon…
by Zoe Irwin in Diary, Hari's, Inspirations
If I had a team of my own and they where fully Zoe trained in my kinda “hair love” way then I would include, as part of my junior training, the Shampoo film.
The lead character, George Roundy, is based on actual hairdresser Jay Sebring and on Jon Peters, the film producer, who is a former hairdresser.
It’s one of my all-time hair video favourites and I have a particular lust award for Goldie Hawn’s hair too.
What better an introduction to Sixties hair?!!

My wonderful friend Nuno sent me this as I am the biggest Luella collector. It’s a design from her final show.

References I love
by Zoe Irwin in Inspirations
I call my friend Ellen: the chick with the best references.
We met over a picture. I sent a photograph of the “kitten” – a haircut that I did five years ago – to the offices of Elle magazine and she booked a haircut with me.
We love the same images and collect pictures of women we would like to be, or perhaps be in another life.
She has a blog http://vagabondiana.blogspot.com. You should read it.
Ellen inspires me, is a dream client, a wonderful friend and is the most amazing writer with a resume that journalists would die for.
Here are some of the references we love…

Bring Me to Life
by Zoe Irwin in Diary
Below is the video for Bring Me to Life. It was shot in Turkey in Istanbal. I wanted to give Katherine’s hair a Sixties feel with, of course, Bridget Bardot as my reference. I teased it at the crown and curled the hair with my new favourite curling iron – the babyliss largest curling tong – which I used all over to add soft movement.
I have been working with Katherine Jenkin’s loads lately. People are fascinated by her and I get asked all the time what she’s like. Obviously she has an unbelievable voice and is very pretty. But I can honestly say she looks that good even at 5am when I often turn up to help her get ready for the day with Charlotte Reid her make-up artist. But to me the most important thing is how kind she is and how many giggles we have together. It’s been a fun three months of shoots and concerts and TV. And as many hair looks as laughs…

Loving this look
by Zoe Irwin in Diary
Liverpool Street station, 5 pm, amongst all the city-safe highlights and office-girl brown tints I found Claire.
She’s my ’bright young ting’ of the day.
Colour spells youth and fun. I bet her mum doesn’t like her new look and I bet she loves the fact her mum doesn’t like it.
I bet she has a mate that is a hairdresser.
Or that she did it herself and it looks better because she did.
She secretly loves Pixie Geldoff and this inspired her.
She is way too cool to tell her friends she loves Pixie.
She is thinking of going another colour next week.
She loves the way she attracts attention from the city crowd.
She is clever and cool and playing with fashion.
Funny how a hairstyle says so many things…
Claire made me smile on the way home

Inside my kit bag…
by Zoe Irwin in Diary, Kit bag
I start my day at 5.30am – it feels like the middle of the night. My car arrives and I pack in my kit, which seems to be growing. I packed and cleaned it late last night and for blog purposes have listed what it now includes:
12 tongs in sizes from super mini to large
2 straighteners
2 crimping irons
2 hairdryers
3 waving iron things, marcel-like
3 wallets of pins, grips in 5 different sizes
1 wallet of hairbands in 10 colours and 5 sizes
27 hair products
1 bag of hair doughnuts and sausages
1 bag of velcro rollers, 6 sizes
6 towels
2 gowns
1 pack of baby wipes
hair wefts in 6 colours
1 wallet with hair glue and removers
1 book of self-made hair references
1 bag of food
1 bag of brushes, 10 sizes
1 ragdoll doll from Cuba (don’t ask)
So the kit weighs in at 27 kilos… I keep it downstairs where all the other flat owners keep their bikes. This baby is not being dragged upstairs with me. But I often fret that the downstairs guys will have someone over that will nick it on the way out. At 5.30 in the morning when I walk downstairs I say a silent thank you that my travelling salon is still there.
