L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy winners, Abacus from Bewdley

The L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy Grand Final was officially the hottest date in the hair calendar. Literally, as temperatures peaked to 30° outside, inside the agenda was sizzling. A nightlong slot from DJ Nikki Beatnik, compering from the irrefutably gorgeous George Lamb, a guest appearance from songstress Misty Miller, strutting Britain’s Next Top Model finalists coiffed by hair maestro Daniel Galvin, shows from Toni&Guy and Brooks+Brooks, and of course some worthy winners -all of this packed into a three and half short hours, over dinner and champagne. Oh yes, the L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy Grand Final was more action-packed and fashion-fueled then ever before. Returning to The Grosvenor House Hotel, 2010’s Grand Final  was an altogether new experience– more intimate for starters, having downsized to exclusive numbers from the billowing halls of last year’s Earls Court. From the get go, Toni&Guy’s ‘Catwalk Inspired’ lived up to L’Oréal Professionnel’s ‘Hair Inspired by Fashion’ agenda, with collections from William Tempest and Giles and a host of off-the wall avant-garde looks.

Brooks+Brooks’ ‘Metamorphosis’ show, delivered impeccable styling and textures, with sequences inspired by classic couture and more zany Alice in Wonderland looks. As for trophy takers, claiming the ultimate titles on the night were L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy winners, Abacus in Bewdley; Men’s Image Award winners, Toni&Guy, Guildford; Young Colourist Award winner, Ayesha Caton of Mack, Chelmsford; and Mizani Afro Catwalk award winner, Elements in Teddington. Indeed, it was an unforgettably haute experience, followed by a marathon after-party.

The L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy circuit is hotting up, and Ireland was first off the starting block with a Grand Final in May. Showcasing brave, new and supremely rampant talent, 2010 will be a year that tops all others. For starters, the imitable House of Colour claimed three out of four titles – The L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy, the Men’s Image Award and Next Generation Colourist Award. The seven strong salon group are hot talent, and even went on to scoop two runner-up awards. Also, victorious on the night, was Zeba Hairdressing, claming the Irish Tatler Style Award, in association with glossy fashion read, Irish Tatler.  Before we even proceed, the D.O.B’s of all winners are worth a mention. Remarkably all award recipients, were twenty-nothings to twenty-somethings – a giddy figure, that only begins to tell the tale of the burgeoning talent out there. Need we mention too, the stage show performances from Brown Sugar and Hession Hairdressing? No sooner do we utter the words, and we’re breathless at the beauty. Fantastique!

After seeing more than 600 competitors across the nation, the judges have spoken; 20 stylists will now fight for the Young Talent Award, while 16 colourists compete for the Color Award later this year at the Wella Professionals Trend Vision UK Final. But what a journey – having stopped in at Glasgow, Manchester and Birmingham, the regional finals finished in London for the Southern heat. Competitors picked their favourite from the four trends for 2010 – Techno Nature, Midnight Stage, Nomad Couture and Natures Goddess – and went wild! The opening burlesque-themed Shimmering Reds show illustrated the talents of Zullo & Holland’s Angelo Vallillo and HOB Salons’ Lyndsay Grossman, last year’s UK Trend Vision Award winners, while Faye Turner and Sharz Din from Sassoon presented its stunning collection, Stage. Paul Adamczuk and Ashley Kerr from Edinburgh’s Cheynes Hairdressing shared their interpretations of the four Trend Vision 10 trends, too – we were loving the haute couture looks! Now it’s all on to the The Roundhouse in Camden this September for the UK final – and we can’t wait!

Marmalade locks in Manchester

London’s cool Café de Paris and Manchester’s elegant Monastery hosted the Aveda Colour Roadshow, where 600 hairdressers gathered to be wowed, once again, by the brand and it’s guest artists’ passion for creativity. First up were presentations and models parading the stage with examples of Aveda’s S/S10 collection, inspired by a thoroughly 80s vibe, as seen in the Bananarama homage Rama – picture marmalade backslashed layers and the scruffy blonde bob Toyah.

The experts get to work

Special guest artists were on hand to show their talents and techniques including Sonia Byrne from Redchat and Robert Eaton from Russell Eaton, who warmed up the crowd for an explosion of kooky colour by a talented mix of Aveda specialists from European education colour specialist Jo McKay, to UK Academy technical director, Ian Michael Black. And the guys from Aveda will return for an Autumn extravaganza, so keep your diaries close…

New President, Terry Calvert raises a glass to his predecessor, Steven Goldsworthy

In a tribute to all things Vegas, the Fellowship for British Hairdressing President’s Night was as razzle-dazzle as the diamante sparkles on Elvis’ suit. Transforming the Grade II Gibson Hall into a casino for one night only, bubbly and bling was de rigueur for the 265 guests who had not only assembled to celebrate Steven Goldsworthy’s two years at the helm of the Fellowship, but to witness the accession of Terry Calvert to the prestigious President’s position. Kicking off proceedings with a so-long speech in retrospect of his time at the top, Steven spent time thanking his colleagues and comrades before handing over the baton to the evening’s entertainment. (Faux) Frank Sinatra and Elvis performed all the old classics, while Steven’s daughter, Sophie Rose, won over the audience with her rendition of ‘Feeling Good’ by soul diva, Nina Simone. Then it was up to magical mistress, Fay Presto to perform an almighty act of illusion, whisking away Steven and conjuring up Terry in seconds. The perfect finale to a feel-good affair, after Terry had expressed his excitement to be taking over as President, the Fellowship casino was declared officially open where games of Roulette and Blackjack gambling kept the crowds captured until the early hours.

14 Apr

A celebration of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing’s award winners tempted us down to the Wella World Studio in central London for its latest Power Night. Clipso’s Terry Calvert, sworn in as President that same day, introduced the hosts on stage to interview the stars of the evening. Robert Masciave, owner of Metropolis and winner of Salon of the Year award discussed how his business is overcoming economic challenges; HOB Salons’ Sean Dawson inspired onlookers with iconic images of Grace Kelly and Jessica Rabbit to explain his inspiration behind the Fashion Focus Image of the Year; and founder of seanhanna, the nine-strong Salon Group of the Year, Sean Hanna explained the importance of having solid systems in place. Closing the evening were members of the FAME Team 2010 – Ben Moth, Kim Rance and Ross Taylor – who revealed their best moments, from dining with the great Robert Lobetta to tackling their first photo shoot with the renowned Errol Douglas. We left feeling properly powered up!
